Diabetes Board decisions

The Board denied an earlier effective date for the award of service connection for type II diabetes mellitus, as it was granted under a liberalizing law effective from August 10, 2022.

The Board granted service connection for tinnitus and remanded the claims for an acquired psychiatric disability, a sleep disorder, type two diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, vertigo, hypertension, migraine headaches, arthritis of various joints, and kidney disease.

The Board remands the claim for service connection of diabetes mellitus, type II, to obtain a new medical opinion that addresses the Veteran's assertions and considers all potential toxic exposures during his service in Southwest Asia.

The Board denied increased ratings for diabetes mellitus, type II and diabetic peripheral neuropathy of the bilateral lower extremities, but granted a 20 percent rating for diabetic peripheral neuropathy of both legs as of February 10, 2022.

Service connection for COPD secondary to asbestos exposure is granted, effective from April 7, 2014. Other issues are remanded.

The Board remanded the veteran's claims for service connection for diabetes mellitus and an initial rating in excess of 10 percent for sinusitis. The decision was based on the need to obtain outstanding private treatment records and conduct a new VA examination.

The Board has remanded the case for further development to address the Veteran's reported exposure to herbicides and common garrison exposures, including fuel, oil, lubricants, and asbestos. The VA will obtain updated medical records, provide a TERA and ILER update, and conduct an examination to determine if the Veteran's diabetes mellitus is related to his service.
