PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) decisions — 2003

The Board has granted service connection for PTSD effective May 13, 1998. The veteran's claim was initially filed in 1997 and he provided evidence of treatment beginning in 1996 or 1997.

The veteran's claim for an earlier effective date for the grant of service connection for PTSD is being remanded due to failure to comply with VCAA requirements. The Board will ensure that the veteran is notified of the applicable provisions of the VCAA, including what evidence is needed to support the earlier effective date claim, what evidence VA will develop, and what evidence the veteran must furnish.

The Board found that the veteran does not have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) linked to an inservice stressor and therefore denied his claim for service connection.

Service connection for PTSD is granted. Service connection for prostate cancer, including based on herbicide agent exposure, is also granted.

The veteran's PTSD is currently rated at the highest possible evaluation of 100 percent due to its severity and impact on his daily life.

The Board has determined that the veteran's PTSD is a result of his active service and grants this claim.

The Board has ordered further development in the veteran's case due to pending issues regarding service connection for a chronic psychiatric disability, including PTSD and depression. The appeal is currently being remanded for additional evidence collection.
