Sinusitis decisions — 2025

The Board granted service connection for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and denied an initial compensable rating for rhinitis, while remanding the claim for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

The Board granted an initial evaluation of 50 percent for headaches and a 30 percent evaluation from April 18, 2024, for rhinitis. Sinusitis was denied, as were TDIU and SMC claims.

The appeal for service connection for a pulmonary condition other than allergic rhinitis was dismissed, while the effective date of service connection for allergic rhinitis was granted earlier to July 14, 2017. The claim for an initial compensable rating for allergic rhinitis was remanded.

The Board denied an increased rating for sinusitis and a compensable rating for rhinitis but granted a 30% rating for migraines from May 9, 2023, to May 18, 2024, and a 50% rating for migraines starting May 19, 2024.

The Board granted service connection for right ankle bursitis, left ankle bursitis, lumbosacral strain with degenerative arthritis and IVDS, a 30 percent rating for the right knee condition, and an initial 10 percent rating for sinusitis.

The Board denied service connection for sinusitis, bronchitis, liver abscess, abdominal aorta, left and right hamstring disabilities. The Board granted an increased disability rating of 40 percent for right upper extremity radiculopathy but denied all other claims.

The appeals for service connection for allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, and bilateral foot fungus, as well as the appeals for SMC pursuant to 38 U.S.C. § 1114(r) and an increased rating for GERD were dismissed due to being already pending at the Board in other appeal streams.

The Board denied service connection for bilateral hearing loss, tinnitus, and higher initial ratings for psychiatric, left shoulder, right hand tremors, left hand tremors, and allergic rhinitis disabilities.

The Board denied the Veteran's claim for a compensable rating for allergic rhinitis as there was no evidence of greater than 50 percent obstruction of the nasal passage on both sides, complete obstruction on one side, or nasal polyps.

The Board granted a 40 percent rating for duodenal ulcer and peptic ulcer disease but denied an increased rating for allergic rhinitis and right maxillary sinus retention cyst, and remanded the claim for service connection for emphysema/lung/breathing issues.

The Board denied increased ratings for fibromyalgia, radiculopathy, hearing loss, and sinusitis but granted service connection for bradycardia and an undiagnosed illness.

The Board granted a 20 percent rating for IBS from May 19, 2024, and denied higher ratings or initial ratings in excess of 10 percent for chronic sinusitis and allergic rhinitis.

The Board granted service connection for an acquired psychiatric disability, identified as GAD, MDD, panic disorder, and somatic symptom disorder, but denied service connection for bilateral hearing loss. A 50 percent initial rating was granted for TMJ disorder.

The Board granted an effective date of December 8, 2017, for the grant of service connection for rhinitis but denied initial compensable ratings and higher ratings for other conditions.

The Board granted service connection for irritable bowel syndrome and sinus problems, diagnosed as chronic sinusitis and allergic rhinitis.

The Board denied service connection for sinusitis, mixed sleep apnea, and tinnitus as there was no evidence of a current disability or an in-service event, injury, or disease related to these conditions.

The Board granted an earlier effective date of May 26, 2023, for the award of service connection for right lower extremity radiculopathy and granted service connection for cervicodorsal myositis. Sinusitis was denied.

The Board denied service connection for asthma, chronic sinusitis, chronic rhinitis, and chronic bronchitis as there was no evidence of current diagnoses at any time since or proximate to when the Veteran filed the claim.

The Board denied service connection for a left meniscus tear, right knee instability, chronic sinusitis or other condition of the nose, throat, larynx and pharynx, diabetes, type 1 or type 2, hypertension (high blood pressure), tinnitus, and visual impairment, including blurry vision, blindness and double vision.
