The Board granted an initial 30 percent disability rating for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) based on the severity of symptoms including abdominal pain, diarrhea, and constipation.
The deciding factor: The Veteran's IBS best approximated severe irritable colon syndrome with more or less constant abdominal distress; or abdominal pain related to defecation at least one day per week during the previous three months; and two or more of the following: change in stool frequency, change in stool form, altered stool passage (straining and/or urgency), mucorrhea, abdominal bloating, or subjective distension.
